Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince adalah film keenam dari seri film Harry Potter yang didasarkan pada novel berjudul sama karya J. K. Rowling. Film ini disutradarai oleh David Yates yang juga menyutradarai film kelima, The Order of the Phoenix. Produser film adalah David Heyman dan David Barron, dengan Steve Kloves sebagai penulis skenario film, yang juga menulis skenario empat film pertama.Pengambilan gambar dimulai pada 24 September 2007 dan film ini dirilis di bioskop-bioskop seluruh dunia pada 15 Juli 2009. Di Indonesia, film ini dirilis pada 16 Juli 2009.
Film ini dibuka dengan kesuksesan komersial dan memecahkan rekor pendapatan film pembukaan terbesar sepanjang masa. Dalam lima hari film ini juga memecahkan rekor pendapatan lima hari terbesar dari seluruh dunia. Film ini juga didedikasikan untuk aktor Rob Knox, yang memerankan Marcus Belby dalam film ini, dan terbunuh pada Mei 2008.

Plot
Sementara itu, Pelahap Maut mulai menimbulkan kerusakan baik di kalangan Muggle (masyarakat manusia biasa non-sihir) maupun Penyihir. Mereka menghancurkan Jembatan Millennium serta menculik pembuat tongkat sihir Mr. Ollivander dan menghancurkan tokonya di Diagon Alley.
Bellatrix Lestrange berhasil membujuk Severus Snape untuk melakukan Sumpah Tak Terlanggar dengan ibu Draco Malfoy, Narcissa. Sumpah ini memastikan agar Snape melindungi Draco dan menyelesaikan tugas yang diberikan Voldemort kepada Draco, jika Draco gagal melakukannya.
Harry, Ron, dan Hermione, ketika sedang berada di Diagon Alley, mengikuti lalu melihat Draco memeasuki toko Borgin and Burkes dan mengambil bagian dalam sebuah ritual bersama kelompok Pelahap Maut. Selanjutnya, ketiga sahabat ini terus mewaspadai tindak-tanduk Draco.
Di Hogwarts, sekolah diamankan secara ketat baik oleh pihak sekolah maupun Kementerian Sihir untuk memastikan agar Pelahap Maut tidak dapat mendekati sekolah tersebut. Dengan kembalinya Slughorn mengajar Ramuan, Snape kini mendapatkan posisi untuk mengajar Pertahanan Terhadap Ilmu Hitam. Profesor McGonagall mendorong Harry dan Ron untuk mengambil kelas Ramuan, yang kini diajar Slughorn yang mau menerima siswa dengan nilai OWL yang lebih rendah. Harry dan Ron, yang tidak membeli buku teks karena tidak menduga bahwa mereka dapat mengambil kelas itu, dipinjami buku teksnya dari kelas Ramuan.
Buku pinjaman Harry sudah dibubuhi tulisan-tulisan petunjuk yang lebih tepat untuk membuat ramuan dan mantra-mantra lain, dan dengan segera membuat Harry menjadi siswa Ramuan nomor satu melebihi siswa lainnya di kelasnya. Harry menemukan di sampulnya bahwa buku itu pernah dimiliki oleh "Pangeran Berdarah-Campuran". Hermione mencari di perpustakaan namun tidak dapat menemukan apa-apa mengenai nama ini. Setelah mengikuti petunjuk tulisan 'Pangeran Berdarah-Campuran', Harry kemudian berhasil memenangkan hadiah cairan keberuntungan, Felix Felicis, dari Profesor Slughorn karena keberhasilannya membuat sebuah ramuan yang sangat sulit.
Ketika akan mengikuti pertandingan Quidditch, Ron merasa gugup. Harry berbuat seolah-olah ia menambahkan cairan keberutungan ke minuman Ron, untuk menaikkan kepercayaan diri Ron. Akibatnya, Ron sukses besar menjadi kiper Quidditch dari tim Gryffindor, dan mendapatkan cinta Lavender Brown. Keduanya berciuman di pesta perayaan kemenangan Gryffindor di Ruang Rekreasi. Hermione yang melihat ini, lari meninggalkan ruangan itu sambil menangis, diikuti oleh Harry. Kepada Harry, Hermione mengakui bahwa ia memiliki perasaan kepada Ron dan mengerti bagaimana perasaan Harry ketika Ginny, yang ditaksirnya, berciuman dengan Dean Thomas.

Dumbledore mengungkapkan memori Tom Riddle—nama asli Voldemort—melalui Pensieve kepada Harry, juga memori Slughorn di mana Riddle menanyakan mengenai suatu Sihir Hitam. Sayangnya memori itu telah diubah Slughorn sehingga tidak diketahui sihir hitam apa yang dibicarakan Slughorn dengan Riddle. Dumbledore mengatakan bahwa Slughorn mungkin takut akan konsekuensinya jika pembicaraan ini terungkap. Dumbledore juga percaya bahwa jika Sihir Hitam yang dibicarakan ini terungkap, maka mereka akan memiliki jalan untuk mengalahkan Voldemort. Karenanya, Dumbledore menyuruh Harry untuk berusaha mendekati Slughorn supaya akhirnya ia mau memberikan memori yang asli.
Dengan menggunakan cairan keberuntungan Felix Felicis yang dimenangkannya pada awal tahun masuk sekolah, Harry 'secara beruntung' berhasil mempertemukan Slughorn dengan Hagrid. Keduanya mabuk setelah upacara penguburan laba-laba raksasa Aragog milik Hagrid, dan Harry berhasil membujuk dan meyakinkan Slughorn untuk memberikan memori yang sesungguhnya.
Memori ini mengungkapkan bahwa Riddle menanyakan mengenai Horcrux, sebuah cara dalam Sihir Hitam untuk membagi jiwa ke dalam Horcrux sehingga pembuatnya tidak dapat mati selama Horcruxnya tidak dihancurkan. Dumbledore mengungkapkan bahwa Buku Harian Riddle (yang dihancurkan Harry pada buku kedua) dan sebuah Cincin milik ibu Voldemort adalah dua dari keenam Horcrux yang dibuat Riddle. Mereka harus mencari seluruh Horcrux dan menghancurkan semuanya supaya Voldemort dapat dikalahkan.
Harry kemudian semakin mencurigai tindak-tanduk Draco, mengikutinya di sekolah, tapi gagal untuk mengetahui apa yang direncanakan oleh Draco. Harry percaya bahwa Draco ada dibalik dua upaya untuk membahayakan hidup Dumbledore: yang pertama melalui kalung mematikan yang dititipkan oleh entah siapa kepada Katie Bell (di bawah Kutukan Imperius) untuk diberikan kepada Dumbledore sebagai hadiah; yang kedua melalui sebuah botol minuman Mead beracun yang hendak dihadiahkan Slughorn, juga terkena kutukan yang sama, kepada Dumbledore. Mantera itu dengan hebat melukai dan membahayakan jiwa Draco. Snape tiba dengan segera, terbawa oleh Sumpah Tak Terlanggarnya, dan menyembuhkan Draco sementara Harry pergi tergesa-gesa. Ginny meyakinkan Harry untuk menyembunyikan buku itu di Kamar Kebutuhan untuk menghindarkan dirinya dari menggunakan buku itu lagi. Di Kamar itu, mereka menemukan Lemari Penghilang, yang sedang diusahakan perbaikannya oleh Draco, namun baik Harry maupun Ginny sama sekali tidak menyadari mengenainya. Ginny menyembunyikan buku itu dan kemudian berciuman dengan Harry.
Dumbledore mengajak Harry untuk membantunya menemukan salah satu Horcrux lainnya, di sebuah tempat yang baru diketahuinya. Keduanya ber-apparate ke sebuah tebing tepi laut, dan masuk ke sebuah gua tempat Horcrux itu disembunyikan. Di tengah-tengah danau di dalam gua itu terdapat sebuah pulau kristal kecil, dan mereka menemukan sebuah ceruk berisi cairan beracun yang di dasarnya terdapat Horcrux itu. Untuk dapat mengambil Horcruxnya, cairan itu harus diminum. Dumbledore menyuruh Harry untuk memaksa dirinya tetap minum cairan beracun itu, karena ia mengetahui bahwa cairan itu dapat mengubah pikiran. Dumbledore menghabiskan cairan beracun itu dengan dibantu-paksa diminumkan oleh Harry. Setelah habis, sementara Dumbledore memulihkan diri dari cairan itu, Harry meraih Horcrux yang berbentuk kalung liontin potret. Saat itu, sangat banyak Inferi (mayat hidup) bergerak dari dasar danau dan menyerang mereka. Dumbledore berhasil kembali ke kesadarannya tepat pada waktunya dan membakar semua Inferi itu, lalu keduanya ber-apparate kembali ke Menara Astronomi di Hogwarts.
Dumbledore, yang masih lemah akibat minum cairan beracun itu, menyuruh Harry untuk memanggilkan Snape. Namun sebelum Harry sempat pergi, terdengar langkah-langkah kaki dan Dumbledore menyuruh Harry untuk bersembunyi di sisi bawah tingkap Menara itu. Suara langkah kaki itu ternyata adalah Draco, yang bersiap untuk membunuh Dumbledore atas perintah Voldemort, tetapi—dari dalam dirinya—ia tidak dapat melakukannya. Sementara itu, Lemari Penghilang telah berhasil diperbaiki sehingga Bellatrix dan para Pelahap Maut lainnya berhasil memasuki Hogwarts melalui Lemari pasangannya di toko Borgin and Burkes, dan menggabungkan diri dengan Draco di Menara berhadapan dengan Dumbledore. Snape secara diam-diam datang melalui tingkap bawah tempat Harry bersembunyi, memberi isyarat agar Harry tetap diam, lalu naik ke atas dan bergabung dengan Pelahap Maut lainnya. Snape lalu melontarkan kutukan Avada Kedavra terhadap Dumbledore yang langsung membunuhnya. Kutukan itu menghantam Dumbledore dan melempar tubuh Dumbledore jatuh ke bawah dari sisi Menara. Snape, Draco, dan Pelahap Maut lainnya meninggalkan sekolah, Bellatrix melontarkan lambang Pelahap Maut ke atas sekolah, lalu menghancurkan Aula Besar, dan membakar pondok Hagrid sambil tertawa riang.
Harry berusaha untuk menghentikan mereka, dan menyerang Snape menggunakan mantera Sectumsempra. Namun Snape menangkis mantera itu dan berhasil menjatuhkan Harry. Sebelum pergi, Snape mengatakan bahwa dialah pencipta mantera Sectumsempra dan bahwa dialah 'Pangeran Berdarah-Campuran' itu.
Para staf guru dan murid-murid Hogwarts berkabung atas kematian Dumbledore dan Ginny menghibur Harry atas kejadian itu. Ketika ditanya, Harry sama sekali menolak untuk mengatakan kepada Profesor McGonagall mengenai apa yang dilakukannya bersama Dumbledore.
Belakangan, Harry mengungkapkan kepada Ron dan Hermione bahwa Horcrux yang ditemukannya bersama Dumbledore itu adalah palsu, berisikan sebuah pesan dari "R.A.B." yang menyatakan bahwa R.A.B. ini telah mengambil Horcrux itu dan berharap agar Voldemort tidak lagi dapat hidup abadi. Harry memberi tahu kedua rekannya bahwa ia tidak akan kembali ke sekolah pada tahun yang akan datang, dan sebaliknya akan mencari R.A.B. dan Horcrux-Horcrux lainnya supaya Voldemort pada akhirnya dapat dibinasakan. Ron dan Hermione mengingatkan Harry bahwa mereka adalah sahabat-sahabatnya dan mereka akan turut pergi bersama Harry dalam misinya itu.
Film ini diakhiri dengan ketiga sahabat itu melihat Fawkes, burung Phoenix milik Dumbledore, terbang menjauh dari batas sekolah Hogwarts.

- Daniel Radcliffe sebagai Harry Potter. Harry Potter sekarang memasuki tahun keenam di Hogwarts, pada periode dunia penyihir dalam peperangan.
- Rupert Grint sebagai Ron Weasley, salah satu sahabat Harry. Walaupun ia jelas-jelas menunjukkan ketertarikan dengan Hermione, ia juga berkencan dengan Lavender Brown yang belakangan diabaikannya.
- Emma Watson sebagai Hermione Granger, salah satu sahabat Harry, yang memiliki perasaan kepada Ron dan menjadi cemburu terhadap Lavender Brown. Sebelum David Yates secara resmi terpilih sebagai sutradara film ini, ada beberapa sutradara yang menyatakan tertarik untuk menyutradarai film keenam ini. Alfonso Cuarón, sutradara film ketiga, mengatakan bahwa ia "akan sangat senang bila mendapatkan kesempatan" untuk kembali. Sutradara Goblet of Fire, Mike Newell, menolak menyutradarai film kelima, dan tidak ditawari untuk film keenam. Terry Gilliam adalah pilihan pribadi Rowling untuk menyutradarai Philosopher's Stone. Set film
Desainer produksi film ini adalah pemenang Academy Award Stuart Craig. Beberapa set baru telah ditampilkan dalam film ini, termasuk Panti Asuhan yang menampung Tom Riddle, Menara Astronomi, dan Gua Horcrux. Pengambilan gambar
Pada 6 Oktober 2007, kru film melakukan pengambilan gambar Hogwarts Express di lingkungan yang berkabut dan berembun di Fort William, Skotlandia. Beberapa adegan malam difilmkan di desa Lacock dan Lacock Abbey selama tiga malam mulai 25 Oktober 2007. Pengambilan gambar dimulai pada pukul 5 sore hingga 5 pagi setiap harinya, dan penduduk di sekitar jalan tempat pengambilan film diminta untuk menggelapkan jendela-jendela mereka dengan tirai gelap. Efek visual
Tim Burke dan Tim Alexander adalah supervisor efek visual dalam film ini. Tim Alexander menyatakan bahwa pembuatan adegan serangan inferi membutuhkan waktu beberapa bulan. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is the sixth of seven novels in the Harry Potter series by British author J. K. Rowling. Set during Harry Potter's sixth year at Hogwarts, the novel explores Lord Voldemort's past, and Harry's preparations for the final battle amidst emerging romantic relationships and the emotional confusions and conflict resolutions characteristic of mid-adolescence.
The book was published in the United Kingdom by Bloomsbury and in the United States by Scholastic on 16 July 2005, as well as in several other countries. It sold nine million copies in the first 24 hours after its release, a record at the time which was eventually broken by its sequel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. There were many controversies before and after it was published, including the right to read the copies delivered prior to the release date in Canada. Reception to the novel was generally positive and it won several awards and honours, including the 2006 British Book of the Year award.
Reviewers noted that the book took on a darker tone than its predecessors, which allowed the reader to cherish the humour. Some considered the main themes to be love and death, and trust and redemption. The character development of Harry and several other teenager characters was also remarked upon.
The film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was released 15 July 2009 by Warner Bros.

Plot introduction
Throughout the five previous novels in the Harry Potter series, the main character, Harry Potter, has struggled with the difficulties that come with growing up and the added challenge of being a famous wizard. When Harry was a baby, Voldemort, the most powerful Dark wizard in history, killed Harry's parents, but the killing curse mysteriously rebounded on Voldemort after unsuccessfully trying to kill Harry. This resulted in Harry's immediate fame and his being placed in the care of his Muggle, or non-magical, Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon, along with their son named Dudley Dursley.Harry entered the wizarding world at the age of 11, enrolling in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He makes friends with classmates Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger and is confronted by Lord Voldemort trying to regain power. After returning to the school after summer break, students at Hogwarts are attacked after the legendary Chamber of Secrets is opened. Harry ends the attacks by killing a Basilisk and defeating another attempt by Lord Voldemort to return to full strength. The following year, Harry hears that he has been targeted by escaped murderer Sirius Black. Despite stringent security measures at Hogwarts, Harry is confronted by Black at the end of his third year of schooling, and Harry learns that Black was framed and is actually Harry's godfather. Harry's fourth year sees him entered in a dangerous magical competition called the Triwizard Tournament. At the conclusion of the Tournament, Harry witnesses the return of Lord Voldemort to full strength. During Harry's fifth year, the Ministry of Magic does not wish to believe that Voldemort is back and appoints Dolores Umbridge as the new High Inquisitor of Hogwarts to keep the students under a close eye. After forming an underground student group in opposition to Umbridge, Harry and several of his friends face off against Voldemort's Death Eaters, a group of Dark witches and wizards, and narrowly defeat them.
Plot summary
Lord Voldemort has returned to power, and his wrath has been felt in both the Muggle and Wizarding worlds. Severus Snape, long considered an enemy of Voldemort and a member of Dumbledore's anti-Voldemort coalition, the Order of the Phoenix, meets with Narcissa Malfoy, mother of Harry's school rival Draco and wife of Lucius, an imprisoned Death Eater. Snape makes an Unbreakable Vow to Narcissa, promising to protect her son, Draco.Dumbledore heads to 4 Privet Drive to collect Harry from his aunt and uncle's house. On their way to the Burrow, home of Harry's best friend Ron Weasley and family, Harry and Dumbledore stop to persuade Horace Slughorn, former Potions teacher at Hogwarts, to return to teaching. When shopping for schoolbooks, Harry, along with his friends Ron and Hermione, follow Draco Malfoy to Dark Arts supplier Borgin and Burkes, where he overhears Draco threatening Borgin and insisting that he fix an unknown object. Harry is instantly suspicious of Draco, whom he believes to be a Death Eater, just like his father. The students return to school, and Dumbledore announces that Snape, the previous Potion teacher, will be teaching Defence Against the Dark Arts, while Slughorn will resume his post as Potions teacher.
Harry receives a used Potions textbook that once belonged to someone named "The Half-Blood Prince." Spells and amendments are written in the margins of the book, which Harry uses to excel at Potions. Dumbledore schedules regular meetings with Harry in which they use Dumbledore's Pensieve to look at memories of those who have had direct contact with Voldemort. Dumbledore believes that if Harry can learn enough about Voldemort's history, it will help him when they finally fight face to face, as the prophecy concerning Harry foretells. Harry learns about Voldemort's family (the Gaunt family), including his grandfather Marvolo, his uncle Morfin, and his mother Merope, who cast a love spell on a Muggle and was abandoned by him when it wore off. Voldemort was left at Wools Orphanage and grew to be an unpleasant and aggressive boy. Harry also learns that Voldemort has divided his soul into seven Horcruxes. Two of these, Tom Riddle's diary and Marvolo's ring, have already been destroyed. One resides in Voldemort, one resides in a snake Nagini, one is Merope's locket, and the other two are suspected to be hidden in objects belonging to Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Gryffindor.
Ron acquires a new girlfriend, Lavender Brown, of whom Hermione is extremely jealous. Harry feels stuck in the middle of his friends' bickering. Eventually, Harry falls in love with Ginny, Ron's sister, and Ron and Lavender break up, making Hermione quite happy. Harry spends much of his time keeping up with his duties as Quidditch captain and following Draco Malfoy. Harry uses his Marauder's Map to keep track of Draco, but often cannot find him on the map. Eventually, Harry realizes that when Draco is not on the map, he is using the Room of Requirement on the seventh floor of Hogwarts, which transforms into whatever its user needs. Harry tries his best to get in to see what Draco is up to, but until he knows exactly what Draco is using the room for, he cannot gain access. Eventually Harry and Dumbledore leave Hogwarts together to fetch and destroy Merope's locket, thus making Voldemort one step closer to mortal. They journey to the middle of a treacherous sea into a cave with "known magic". They must overcome a variety of traps and challenges before reaching the basin where the locket is hidden under a poisonous potion. Dumbledore drinks the potion and Harry fights off Voldemort's Inferi, an army of re-animated corpses. They take the locket and return to Hogwarts as quickly as possible. Dumbledore is quite weak, and when they reach Hogsmeade they can see that the Dark Mark is visible above the astronomy tower.
Harry and Dumbledore rush toward the tower. When they arrive, Dumbledore uses his magic to freeze Harry in place, while Harry remains hidden by his cloak of invisibility. Draco Malfoy sprints into the room, threatening Dumbledore's life. Weak and with his wand out of reach, Dumbledore stalls Draco, telling him that he is not a killer and that the Order of the Phoenix could protect him and his mother from Voldemort. Draco lowers his wand, and Snape pushes into the tower. Harry cannot move or speak, but he hears members of the Order fighting Death Eaters below. Snape raises his wand and kills Dumbledore, sending him flying over the edge of the tower. When Dumbledore dies, his spell on Harry is broken, and Harry rushes after Snape, determined to avenge the death of his friend and headmaster. Snape escapes, and Harry is devastated. He looks at the locket he and Dumbledore retrieved and realizes that it is not a Horcrux. Inside the locket is a note from someone named "R. A. B."
After Dumbledore's funeral, Hermione informs Harry that the half-blood prince was Snape, who had a Muggle father and a witch mother whose maiden name was Prince. Harry is devastated to think that he liked, trusted and took help from the man who would grow up to be Dumbledore's murderer. He tells his friends he will not be returning to Hogwarts next year and will instead search out and kill Voldemort by destroying all of the Horcruxes. Ron and Hermione vow to join him.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is the sixth book in the Harry Potter series. The first book in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was first published by Bloomsbury in 1997, with an initial print-run of 500 copies in hardback, 300 of which were distributed to libraries. By the end of 1997, the UK edition won a National Book Award and a gold medal in the 9- to 11-year-olds category of the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize. The second book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, was originally published in the UK on 2 July 1998 and in the US on 2 June 1999. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was then published a year later in the UK on 8 July 1999 and in the US on 8 September 1999. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was published on 8 July 2000 at the same time by Bloomsbury and Scholastic.[ Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the longest novel in the Harry Potter series, was released 21 June 2003. After the publishing of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the seventh and final novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, was released 21 July 2007. Rowling started writing Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince before her third son, David, was born, but she took a break to care for him. The first chapter, "The Other Minster", which features the meeting between the Muggle Prime Minister, Cornelius Fudge, and his successor, Rufus Scrimgeour, was a concept Rowling tried to start Philosopher's Stone, Prisoner of Azkaban, and Order of the Phoenix, but she found "it finally works" in Half-Blood Prince. She stated that she was "seriously upset" writing the end of the book, although Goblet of Fire was the hardest to write.When asked if she liked the book, she responded, "I like it better than I liked 'Goblet', 'Phoenix or 'Chamber' when I finished them. Book six does what I wanted it to do and even if nobody else likes it (and some won't), I know it will remain one of my favourites of the series. Ultimately you have to please yourself before you please anyone else!"Rowling revealed the title of Half-Blood Prince on her website on 29 June 2004. Controversies
The record-breaking publication of Half-Blood Prince was accompanied by controversy. In May 2005, bookmakers in the UK suspended bets on which main character would die in the book amid fears of insider knowledge. A number of high value bets were made on the death of Albus Dumbledore, many coming from the town of Bungay where, it was believed, the books were being printed at the time. Betting was later reopened. Bloomsbury published the book on 30% recycled paper in response to Greenpeace's campaign on using forest friendly paper for big-name authors.Right-to-read controversy
In early July 2005, a Real Canadian Superstore in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada, accidentally sold fourteen copies of The Half-Blood Prince before the authorised release date. The Canadian publisher, Raincoast Books, obtained an injunction from the Supreme Court of British Columbia prohibiting the purchasers from reading the books before the official release date or from discussing the contents.Purchasers were offered a Harry Potter T-shirt and an autographed copy of the book if they returned their copies before 16 July.On 15 July, less than twelve hours before the book went on sale in the Eastern time zone, Raincoast warned The Globe and Mail newspaper that publishing a review from a Canada-based writer at midnight, as the paper had promised, would be seen as a violation of the trade secret injunction. The injunction sparked a number of news articles alleging that the injunction had restricted fundamental rights. Canadian law professor Michael Geist posted commentary on his blog; Richard Stallman called for a boycott, requesting that the publisher issue an apology. The Globe and Mail published a review from two UK-based writers in its 16 July edition and posted the Canadian writer's review on its website at 9:00 that morning. Style and themes
Some reviewers noted that Half-Blood Prince contained a darker tone unlike the previous Potter novels. The Christian Science Monitor's reviewer Yvonne Zipp considered to first half to contain a lighter tone to soften the unhappy ending. The Boston Globe reviewer Liz Rosenberg wrote, "lightness [is] slimmer than ever in this darkening series...[there is] a new charge of gloom and darkness. I felt depressed by the time I was two-thirds of the way through". Christopher Paolini called the darker tone "disquieting" because it was so different from the earlier books. Liesl Schillinger, a contributor to The New York Times book review, also noted that Half-Blood Prince was "far darker" and it was "leavened with humor, romance and snappy dialogue".Rosenberg considered the two main themes of Half-Blood Prince as love and death. Deepti Hajela also pointed out Harry's character development, that he was "no longer a boy wizard; he's a young man, determined to seek out and face a young man's challenges". Paolini had similar views, claiming, "the children have changed...they act like real teenagers".Zipp also considered trust and redemption to be themes promising to continue in the final book.

Critical reception
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince received generally positive reviews. Liesl Schillinger of The New York Times was very positive about the book, praising the novel's various themes and suspenseful ending. Kirkus Reviews said it "will leave readers pleased, amused, excited, scared, infuriated, delighted, sad, surprised, thoughtful and likely wondering where Voldemort has got to, since he appears only in flashbacks". Yvonne Zipp of The Christian Science Monitor praised the way Rowling evolved Harry into a teenager, but noted that it "gets a little exposition-heavy in spots". Christopher Paolini, writing for Entertainment Weekly, pointed out that the change of tone was "disquieting" as the world evolved, and praised the character development. However, he considered Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire the best. The Boston Globe correspondent Liz Rosenberg wrote, "The book bears the mark of genius on every page" and praised the imagery and darker tone of the book. Translations
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was published simultaneously in the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Along with the rest of the books in the Harry Potter series, it was eventually translated into 67 languages. In Germany, a group of "hobby translators" translated the book via internet in less than two days after release, far before German translator Klaus Fritz could translate and publish the book.Textual changes
As with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the United States version of the novel has slightly changed text from the British version. One particular section has been remarked upon, where the alteration makes the nature of Dumbledore's offer to Draco Malfoy before Snape kills Dumbledore in the Half-Blood Prince explicit. The reason for the editing of the following text has not been explained on the author's webpage, but the British edition is more ambiguous. The text can be found in Chapter 27, "The Lightning-Struck Tower". The U.S. text was changed to match the UK version with the publication of the paperback edition. The parts added in the hardcover United States version have been highlighted in bold, below:"[...] He told me to do it or he'll kill me. I've got no choice." "He cannot kill you if you are already dead. Come over to the right side, Draco, and we can hide you more completely than you can possibly imagine.
